Baldy Village area) Come join us for a delightful hike up Bear Canyon. This trail is "just across the road" from Ice House Canyon, a favorite of this Club. Distance is about 2 miles one way, with about 1200 feet of elevation gain. It's a good conditioning hike if it's been a while since your feet saw a real trail! We will continue uphill, past several rustic cabins, as we listen to the gurglings of Bear Creek. We join the main trail and see a constantly-changing variety of plants, trees and wildflowers. The trail makes an abrupt turn from the creek, and we contour around a bend in the sun (nice view on a clear day). Before you know it, you're at Bear Flats, our lunch stop. Continuing up this trail, you will encounter Mt. San Antonio ("Old Baldy") at the 10,064 foot level. It's only another six miles and 5500 feet gain. Anyone deciding to go this way should plan on a coming down via a stretcher (You can meet the rest of us at the Pizza Hut in Ontario). The trail is mostly under shade, so if it is overcast you should bring a light jacket. There is NO WATER anywhere outside Baldy Village, so plan on at least one liter per person (or dog). Of course, we always recommend the ten essentials. Directions: From the 10 (San Bernardino) or 60 (Pomona) freeways, exit Mountain Avenue and continue North. Mountain Ave. will end at Euclid Ave. (yes, I know they parallel each other on the flats); continue West (left turn) on Euclid, then right (North) at the stop sign. Continue up the hill to Baldy Village (speed limit 25!) and look for the Fire Station on the left. Just a bit further you'll see the sign for the Church (also on the left). Turn into the parking lot here and park near the street (public area). Driving time is approx. 1.5 hours from the South Bay area. If you'd like to get some fresh air and stretch your legs, please let me know. Hope to see you Saturday! Mick Herod Work (213) 603-5574 Home (714)628-2431
