Date: 8 Apr 87 01:18:52 PDT (Wednesday) Subject: XMBC MOONLIGHT HIKE Saturday: Peak 2049 from Tapia Park From: "Bruce Hamilton".OsbuSouth To: BackpackInterest.ESArea cc: XMBCOfficers.ESArea Reply-to: Hamilton.OsbuSouth Hike #28 in McAuley's "Hiking Trails of the Santa Monica Mountains". WHEN: meet at 5:15pm this Saturday 11 April at the Tapia Water Reclamation Facility turnoff on Malibu Canyon Road. Hike will depart at 5:30 so we can catch the sunset over the ocean. MAP: Malibu Beach topo DISTANCE: 6 miles total ELEVATION: 1500' gain and loss to peak 2049 feet above sea level TERRAIN: Steep fire road. You could use a mountain bike. TIME: approx. 2 hours 45 minutes hiking plus about an hour at the top. BRING: 10 essentials, warm clothing HOW TO GET THERE: take Malibu Canyon Road either south from the Ventura Freeway or north from the coast highway. I think the former is slightly easier. Don't get confused like I did. "Malibu" has nothing to do with "Topanga". If you're coming from the coast, Malibu Canyon Road is the turnoff just before the big Pepperdine University campus, and goes past Hughes Research. You'll see big signs on the west side of the road for "Tapia Park" and "Tapia Water Reclamation Facility". The trail head leads up a steep slope about 1/10 mile south of Tapia Park, across the bridge on Malibu Canyon Road and next to a " 35 MPH" sign on the west side of the road. Watch out for all the "No Parking" signs. The best bet for parking seems to be along the road leading into "Tapia Water Reclamation Facility". Flyers with more detailed trail info and map will be in the mail to XMBC members, or write to me. RSVP and LET ME KNOW IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN A PRE-HIKE PIZZA GATHERING. --Bruce
