Trip Announcement A Day Hike to Orchard Camp Sunday, 4 December 1983 Come join us on our last scheduled hike of the year and the first club hike on this particular trail. If Saturday's hike to Monrovia Peak looks a bit too strenuous, this one may be just right. Of course, some of you die-hards may do both. This hike departs from the north edge of the small town of Sierra Madre and follows a good trail up Little Santa Anita Canyon to the site of an old resort (now gone) called Orchard Camp. Prior to the resort, some homesteaders had planted a small orchard; hence, the name. Another interesting bit of history (from Robinson's "Trails of the Angeles", Trip #39) is that the telescope for the first observatory on Mt. Wilson was hauled, piece by piece, up this trail. Hike Details: Rating - Moderate. Distance - 9 mi RT. Elevation gain - 2000 ft. Map - Mt. Wilson topo Bring your 10-Essentials, lunch & water, etc. Tennis shoes are OK. A poncho or other rainwear is a good idea this time of year unless Dr. George says no rain (and you're willing to get wet anyhow)! But be sure to have a windbreaker & warm clothing. We will cancel if it looks like bad weather. Meeting details: Park near the junction of Mira Monte Ave. & Mt. Wilson Trail Drive in Sierra Madre, but not above that intersection since the Drive is a private road. (Sierra Madre is east of Pasadena & Altadena.) The plan is to start the hike at 9:30 am sharp, so please get there earlier to get boots on, etc. For further information or car pooling assistance, please call Jack Cook, ext. 35214 (536-5214) or 371-2706 at home. (I may be on vacation beween now & then.) See you there, Jack
