Friends and Friends-to-be, Here it is---finally---at the very last minute!!! Aug. 25th, Saturday 10 am at trailhead Bluff Cove to Rocky Point (maybe to Lunada Bay): 3 (4) miles round trip 250 ft elevation loss & gain You might be a happier hiker if you come prepared with: light windbreaker, sunglasses, cap to sheild the sun but can withstand an ocean breeze, sunscreen, water, snack, and most important---comfortable and sturdy shoes worn with thick socks! Hiking this rocky beach will be leisurely to allow for careful steps to be taken. Also, to give us the opportunity to look down at the tidepools and up at the interesting bluffs. The hike will begin at Flat Rock Point, southward around Bluff Cove to Rocky Point. Notably, will be the terraces, or platforms, the results of a combination of uplift and sea-level fluctuations caused by the formation and melting of glaciers. Today the waves, as they have for so many thousands of years, are actively eroding the shoreline, cutting yet another terrace onto the land. While enjoying this walk, we'll pass beautiful coves, where whaling ships once anchored and delivered their cargo of whale oil. Large iron kettles, used to boil whale blubber, have been found in sea caves. Indians, Spanish rancheros and Yankee smugglers have all added to the peninsula's romantic history. A slance over your right shoulder brings a view of Santa Monica Bay, the Santa Monica Mountains in gray silhouette and on the far horizon, the Channel Islands. As the coastline turns south, Catalina can often be seen. Along this stretch of shoreline, numerous stacks, remnants of former cliffs not yet dissolved by the surf, can be seen. We will stop at a magnificent tidepool at Rocky Point or maybe even continue on to Lunada Bay. Quite evident is the popularity of this area as evidenced by the unsightly debris left by humanoids. If a few of us brought trash bags to fill on our way back, we may make help make the beach more enjoyable for thoes who follow our footprints. Directions to the trailhead: take Hawthorne Bl south to Pacific Coast Hwy. Head west on PCH then make a left onto Palos Verdes Dr. , heading south. As you pass Malaga Cove Plaza, turn right at the first stop sign (Via Corta). Make a right on Via Arroyo, then at the stop sign, make a left. Drive by the massive, beautiful Neighborhood Church to just beyond the next stop sign. Park on the shoulder of the road, where a grassy strip borders the cliffs. Watch for my black Honda Prelude!
