The very well-maintained trail ascends 2,000 feet to a pleasant area (lots of flat rocks to doze on) at an elevation of 7,528 feet. Much of the way is through scenic forest, but do count on some exposed areas and hope for a breeze. Self-issued permits are required. I will fill out a permit for the number of people expected; if you have not notified me that you are coming, you should go to the ranger station in Idylwild (approximately 1 mile down the road, south of the trailhead) and fill out a permit. Distance from South Bay to trailhead via Hemet is about 134 miles, 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The mileage via I-10 to Banning and up Rte. 243 is longer, but travel time may be shorter, 2 1/4 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. Going via Banning nets more freeway driving. Contact me after Tuesday 9/22 but before Friday evening 9/25 to let me know you are going. Work phone number is (213) 553-9980. Fires, extreme heat or humidity cancel. Our favorite pizza place in Idylwild, Michelli's, has moved to a smaller but easier to find location. The food is better, too. April Bogert-Neary
